Misty Copeland’s ‘A Ballerina’s Tale’ at Theatre N this Weekend!

Rising star Misty Copeland’s made history when she became the first African-American woman to be named principal dancer of the legendary American Ballet Theater. She inspired a world of young dancers in her debut book, An Unlikely Ballerina, and tells the story of a woman caught between the control and comfort she found in the world of ballet and the harsh realities of her own life, and has to choose to embrace both her identity and her dreams, and find the courage to be one of a kind.

The feature documentary, ‘A Ballerina’s Tale’ is the incredible, behind-the-scenes story of how she overcame a tumultuous upbringing and near career-ending injuries to become one of the most revered dancers of her generation. More than just a ballet success story, Copeland’s journey is a hugely inspirational, universal tale of perseverance. ‘A Ballerina’s Tale’

We are so excited to bring this film to Theatre N in downtown Wilmington! Directed by Nelson George, the show will run November 20th through the 25th. Showtimes are as follows :

Fri. 1pm, 7pm | Sat. 5pm | Sun. 1pm, 7pm | Tues. 4pm | Wed. 7pm

My inspiration comes from observing nature; its physical wonders and beauty, its rhythm and subtlety, its power and spirit. I try to capture the silent harmony and balance of the divergent expressions of life.

Art Loop Wilmington Artist Feature : Alim Smith

While unrealized at first, Martin Lawrence, Solange Knowles, Erykah Badu and Snoop Dogg all have a common connection to the biggest city in the small state of Delaware. They have all become fans of the work of Wilmington native and artist, Alim Smith. Alim is one of the many artists featured in this month’s Art Loop at one of the dozens of venues, Levitea Tea Shop, in Downtown Wilmington. You may have seen his work before and more notably so this year after Alim curated a collection of portrait paintings entitled In Living Color : My Black History, where each day he featured an African American of great influence to himself and Black culture in the 90’s and early 00’s. The collection gained notoriety as the subjects of the portraits discovered their faces re imagined as the work of Alim on Facebook and Instagram. When asked of his favorite celebrity learning about his work he quickly answered without hesitation, “Snoop. Hands down.”

“Confidence and consistency. That’s my recipe for success.” A graduate of Cab Calloway School of the Arts in Wilmington, Alim credits his schoolmates and fellow artists, Terrance Vann and Michael Silva, as a major influence in his growth as an artist. “They were my best friends and my competition, healthy competition. We were always pushing each other, to work harder and be better.”

Smith, also known as ‘Yesterday Nite’ will be sharing his latest collection that he notes is inspired by rapper Kendrick Lamar’s newly debuted short comedic music video, “These Walls.”

I just loved it. It made me happy. Kendrick released such a heavy, conscious and thought provoking album and the tone of video was just so unexpected. It was lively and entertaining. Amidst everything happening in this video and the rest of the country and the world, the black men and women in the video were still dancing. There was still joy. “

With paintings that carry tones of expressionism that are emotive and stirring, Smith conveys that he has not found a definitive way to characterize his artistic style. Other than an early introduction and inspiration thanks to world famous graphic artist, M.C. Escher, Smith explains “It’s just mine. My own — but I always want my work to do one thing and that is tell a story.”

Kendrick Lamar in Smith’s painting for ‘These Walls’ Collection to be featured in November 6th’s Art Loop Opening Night

You can view and purchase more of Alim’s work on his website and check out the dozens of other artists featured in the upcoming Art Loop by downloading November’s Art on the Town map and schedule here
