Team Familiar

Familiar Faces (#TeamFamiliar) was formed in 2001 through the vision and leadership of legendary Go-Go great, Donnell Floyd. Known as the premiere “Grown & Sexy Band” of the DMV, they have quickly risen to one of the hottest bands on the scene. They have performed with the likes of national recording artist greats, such as Montell Jordan, Tony Terry, Fantasia, Marsha Ambrosius, R. Kelly, Raheem DeVaughn and Melanie Fiona. They are the hosts of the wildly popular Go-Go Miami – an annual party that shuts down South Beach with exclusive live performances and parties.
Familiar Faces’ chemistry is powered by the Go-Go legends that make up the band, many of whom have fronted their own bands. With serious vocal talent, a full horn section, and intense pocket beats, Familiar Faces is versatile enough to move from jazz and pop to hip-hop oriented go-go crank. The band lineup includes: Donnell Floyd – vocals/saxophone; Frank “Scooby” Marshall – vocals/guitar; Jeffery “Jammin Jeff” Warren – drums; Marquis “Quisy” Melvin – vocals; Kimberly “Kim Michelle” Graham – vocals; Derek “DP” Paige, Sr. – trumpet/vocals; Jasen “O” Holland – trumpet/vocals; Byron “BJ” Jackson – keyboards; Mike Arnold – keyboards; Sean Geason – bass; Eric “Bojack” Butler – percussion; and Milton “Go-Go Mickey” Freeman – congas.

Dennis Youngblood

Hailing from Charlestown, MA, Dennis Taylor (also known as The Ivory Teddy Bear) was born to be a performer; his talent and love of Motown and R&B transcends his young age of 20. Fans feel that they are watching an old soul when they see Dennis perform. He truly captures the passionate love affair that is R&B channeling soulful influences such as Luther Vandross, Teddy Pendergrass and Walter Jackson.

Dennis “Youngblood” Taylor’s artistry and respect for R&B music has allowed him many extraordinary opportunities. He has had the privilege of being the headlining act at various well known venues including The Kimmel Center in Philadelphia and the TD Garden in Boston. Additionally, he has performed alongside big names in the R&B music industry including, Tavares, Darlene Love, Harold Melvin’s Blue Notes and more.

Bloodstone

Formed in 1962, Kansas City’s “BLOODSTONE” remains one of the soul music scene’s brightest and longest-burning light. BLOODSTONE has been together for more than four decades, all the while performing with some of R&B and Pop music’s most renowned and revered artists.

Wowing the local scene as “The Sinceres” (a self contained vocal/instrumental group), band founders Harry Williams, Charles McCormick, Charles Love, Willis Draffen, Roger Durham, Melvin Webb, Hense Powell and Kenneth Smith took their unique sound to stages across their native Kansas City, crossing racial boundaries and working to establish harmony both on and off stage. The band honed its skills and crafted what became the distinctive Bloodstone sound before striking out for London, England, in 1972.

In 1975, the group starred in the hilarious movie “Train Ride to Hollywood” where they wrote the entire movie sound track. You can hear the sound track by going to Bloodstone International.Com

Breakwater

Back and better than ever, Philadelphia’s Breakwater brings a fusion of funk, R&B and jazz to the stage. Breakwater formed in 1971 and seven years later were signed to Arista Records by music mogul Clive Davis. After two successful albums that featured hits such as “Say You Love Me Girl”, “Work It Out” and “Release the Beast”, the band made a decision to split, but continued to make music separately through various side projects. Thirty years later, the legendary blues funk jazz horn band has reunited and are bringing their fantastic sound to Wilmington for the Rodney Square Summer Stage.

Rick James Stone City Band

Formed in 1978, by The King of Punk Funk, Rick James, The Original Stone City Band served as Rick’s exclusive recording and touring band from the beginning and through the height of his career. They were responsible for cranking out the memorable sounds to timeless hits such as “You and I”, “Super Freak”, “Mary Jane”, “Bustin’ Out”, “Ghetto Life”, “Fire and Desire”, The Temptations’ “Standing on the Top”, The Mary Jane Girls’ “All Night Long”, “Boys”, “In My House” and many, many more.

Along with their hits “Ladies Choice”, “Strut Your Stuff”, “Freaky” and others; a portion of the show pays a beautifully produced tribute to the late Rick James and Teena Marie with hits such as “Bustin’ Out”, “Ghetto Life”, “Superfreak”, “Mary Jane”, “Fire and Desire” and much more. The crowds love the show and coming out in numbers! Time to Funk ‘n’ Roll!

Lakeside

The Dayton, Ohio, based band was formed when Otis Stokes (guitar, vocals) and Thomas Shelby(lead vocals) quit the Bad Bunch to team up with Mark Wood (lead vocals, keyboards) in the Young Underground. After signing a deal in Chi-Town they changed the name to Ohio Lakeside Express, which in due course was thankfully shortened to Lakeside.

In 1972 the band hit the road hit the road for a live gig in Oklahoma City. By this time they had addedStephen Shockley (guitar), Fred Alexander (drums), Tiemeyer McCain (who shared lead vocals w/ Wood and Shelby), Marvin Craig (bass), Fred Lewis (percussion) and Norman Beavers (keyboards). They got the shaft on the OKC gig and ended in La-La Land as one of the first acts signed to Dick Griffey’s SOLAR (Sound of Los Angeles Records) label. Likewise the group served as the house band for labelmates, Shalimar and Dynasty, and also ended up penning quite a few tunes for these and other groups.

This funk group secured its first hit in 1978 with “It’s All The Way Live.”

In 1979, they released “Rough Riders” with a Wild Bunch theme and the funky dance track, “If You Like Our Music (Get On Up and Move).” 1980 gave them their biggest glory with “Fantastic Voyage” with its pirates motif. The single (R&B #1) by the same name provided the dance tune many were waiting for in the post-disco era. “Fantastic Voyage” was later sampled by Coolio on his smash hit by the same name. That album also featured “Your Love Is On the One” and the ballad “Say Yes.” 1981 brought the Aladdin-themed “Your Wish Is My Command.” The title track was especially popular among fans.

Come get your soul some funk this Saturday at the Rodney Square Summer Stage!

On the Rodney Square Summer Stage Friday July, 22nd

The London Souls, Tinsley Ellis and Pearl Street Band kick off our second week of the 2016 Rodney Square Summer Stage!

The London Souls

The London Souls’ unique reinterpretation of classic hard-hitting rock and roll formulae recalls elements of the past with an ever-present boundless energy, fit to cement their place in the future. Tash and Chris have been nothing short of a best-kept secret among New York City concertgoers since the bands formation in 2008, building a fervent and dynamic fan base leveraged by their ever sustained reputation for consistently well-rehearsed and impassioned, explosive live performances. The band’s celebrated sound and spirit draws significant influence from the driving force of British rock pioneers Cream and Led Zeppelin to billowing and bouncing funk and soul, to the layered harmonies and memorable hooks of The Beatles and The Hollies, to the contemporary psychedelia of My Morning Jacket among many more.

Pearl Street Band

13240080_1166573140048939_4085503303420572352_n

Pearl Street” is a derivative of two former Long Island bands of the past; “Pearly” and “South Street” both of Oyster Bay, N.Y. The marriage of these bands creates a unique brand of many genres of music.

The talented horn players, John Marshall; tenor sax, Terry Negrilli ; trombone and Leon Pretuzzi on trumpet remains the tightest and most uplifting section to be reckoned with. Mike Mattia continues to produce the exciting horn arrangements and funkiness on keyboard as he did for the 26 piece band that backed Peggy Lee, Manhattan Transfer and Petula Clark at the Empire Room in NYC. Our drummer, Greg D’Anca is harmonicaly balanced. His sticks are live with enthusiasm. He is the core to a great beat and one hell of a nice guy. Willie Maiorello, lead vocalist and bass player is revered for his amazing talent to interpret any style of music with warmth, excitement and deep emotion. Going from raw and raspy to velvety smooth with one of the most unique Voices, Willie gives his audience their money’s worth and then some. His humble persona only makes his talent that much more appreciated. Leslie Zimei, lead vocalist readily jumped at the chance to work with musicians of this caliber. Her resume includes opening for Manhattan Transfer. Peggy Lee, Petula Clark and Fred Travelina as well as lead vocalist for Cadillac Moon for 9 years.

The music of Pearl Street is a combination of Funk, R & B, Blues and Jazz bringing a great selection of songs for listening, dancing and a good time for all!

Tinsley Ellis

tinsleyEllis
Tinsley Ellis has travelled a million miles, and through that journey he has become a man with clarity about where he stands today and his future destination. As a proud Georgia-based artist, with his new album Red Clay Soul he celebrates a legacy built on four decades of performing, recording and song writing. Travelers headed to Florida or other destinations in the Southeastern U.S. encounter red clay embankments as they hit the state of Georgia, and Ellis has chosen to title this new collection Red Clay Soul to celebrate the music of the area. He offers, “Georgia is where the Blues has got Soul. From the gospel inspired Ray Charles, to the R&B of James Brown and Otis Redding, to the Rock and Roll of Little Richard, to the Blues Rock of The Allman Brothers Band, all these acts have one thing in common. They all have the sound of Georgia and down here we call that sound red clay soul.”

Tinsley Ellis has achieved a lot of success and worked with some of the best in the business. He has toured the globe, released 19 albums, and hit the heights of commercial success with songs covered by other artists – notably, Jonny Lang recording “A Quitter Never Wins.” Ellis even gave Derek Trucks his recording debut on Ellis’ Storm Warning. He won Rock/Blues Album Of The Year with Tough Love in 2015 from Blues Blast Magazine and made many “Best Of” lists within Downbeat and others. Tinsley Ellis continues to release compelling music and bring it night after night at one venue after another across the globe, sharing his blues-steeped legacy, fine songwriting, and deep pride in being a Georgia-based artist.

On the Rodney Square Summer Stage this Saturday July 16, 2016

The 2016 Rodney Square Summer Stage continues Saturday July 15th with two extraordinary acts, Jacey Falk and Orchestra and Blind Date Band.

Jacey Falk and Orchestra

Who is Jacey Falk? A Jazz, Blues and Pop singer? Comedian? Producer? All of these things and more create the portrait that is Jacey Falk. Falk has always had an affinity for making things alright. Blessed as a phenomenal tenor whose voice slices through the wind like an eagle’s wing, Jacey sets the record straight. He makes it alright. He reminds you through his music and humor that life is more than wonderful–it’s beautiful and worth living.

Born in Savannah, GA, Falk began performing at the tender, young age of four. While attending high school he began to learn how to sing Jazz and Blues under the guidance of his band director, Sgt. Stanley Anderson. After graduating from Savannah State University he moved to New York to make it to the “big time.” Falk found himself working as a booking agent for Jazz One Productions by day and singing in little clubs by night. After six months he left Jazz One productions and opened his own agency, M.F. Productions.

With the birth of M.F. Productions, Jacey Falk became the youngest agent/producer in the history of jazz. He worked with legends such as: Lionel Hampton, Jack McDuff, Donald Harrison, Harry “Sweets” Edison, Red holloway, Linda Hopkins, Greg Osby, Cyrus Chesnut, Odetta, Nicholas Payton, Javon Jackson, Curtis Fuller, Diane Schuur, Kevin Montgomery and Benny Golson; and yet these are only a handful of the artists the company has represented and worked with.

By December 2000 he felt the time had come for a change; Falk had become a voiceless singer until Jazz legend, Abbey Lincoln encouraged him to return to the stage. She and his physician financed a demo record that allowed him to obtain a record deal with Q&W Records. In 2003 Jacey Falk’s debut record, From A Place Within, was released featuring a duet “I’ve Been There” (which received critical acclaim and much air play) between him and his godmother, R&B legend, Ruth Brown (for whom this would be her last recording). Little did he know the ride through the music industry would not end there.

Over the years he has become a producer whose talents have been in high demand. He produced four of Curtis Fuller’s most successful records to date. This Is Curtis Fuller (Progressive), Up Jumped Spring (Delmark), Keep it Simple (High Note), and The Story of Cathy & Me (Challenge) which featured popular songs such as “I Asked and She Said Yes” and “Life Was Good, What Went Wrong?

Falk has also had over fifteen Jazz, Latin and Blues productions. The Legends of The Bandstand, The United Trombone Summit, The United Alto Summit, Al Grey & the Bone Crushers, The Curtis Fuller Super Band, Benny Golson & Curtis Fuller: Together Again, The Keepers of The Beat, and M.F. Production’s Celebration of Lionel Hampton are just a few of his many creations.

Jacey Falk’s innovative ear, enthusiasm for his craft and heavily rooted background in the arts will exude through its’ golden essence as his voice and lyrics spirit you away down a river through emotion and time. To hear his unhinged soul in his voice is to experience the rustic, sage barkeep that slides you that late night drink that let’s you know everything will be alright.
