Cityfest produces/co-produces activities designed to promote economic development and community revitalization while improving quality of life through arts programming, special events, and tourism. Activities strive to foster an appreciation for Wilmington’s diverse culture, history, and heritage; eliminate prejudice and discrimination through education of the public; combat community deterioration; promote the beautification and revitalization of Wilmington; and lessen neighborhood tension.

Bloomberg Asphalt Art Initiative Mural

Arts Work Mural apprentice Brainstorming

With a grant from Bloomberg Philanthropies, the City of Wilmington and Cityfest have completed a street mural on Clifford Brown Walk as part of the Bloomberg Asphalt Art Initiative. The award is to improve street and pedestrian safety, revitalize and beautify underutilized public space, and promote collaboration and civic engagement in communities. Painted by artist Bruce Gulick and community volunteers including Arts Work apprentices, the mural celebrates the legacy of jazz musician Clifford Brown and Wilmington’s rich musical history.

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the mural’s purpose is to encourage pedestrian safety and traffic flow on Clifford Brown Walk between 15th and 16th Street. The project facilitates increased foot traffic due to concerts and events held at the Tina Betz Urban Artist Exchange and has led to improved and ongoing safety measures for the street. A grand reveal and community reception will be held in May 2025.

Urban Artist Exchange

The former Wilmington Police Department mounted patrol horse stables and the Urban Environmental Center have transformed into the Urban Artists Exchange (UAE) — an arts-based community development center that engages and employs young urban artists by offering hands-on education initiatives.
